SOUTH EL MONTE, Calif.—A dispute that erupted outside South El Monte High School’s graduation ceremony led to one man being stabbed, and authorities were searching for the assailant Thursday, June 6.

The stabbing occurred around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 1000 block of Durfee Avenue, just outside the school football field’s fence, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

A fight broke out between two men in their 20s following the graduation, a watch commander at the Temple City Sheriff’s Station told City News Service.

The fight, believed to have involved people from two separate families, resulted in one person being stabbed in the upper body and another person being punched or slapped, Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Lewis told KNX News. The man who was stabbed was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Sheriff’s officials said the connection between the involved parties was unclear, “but deputies are looking for footage and witnesses” to the fight. Deputies said they were searching for two suspects, described only as men who were wearing all black at the time.

Mr. Lewis told KNX detectives believe they know the identity of at least one of the suspects. The victim’s name has not been released.
