Joe Sellers was in a computer programming club during school when he reached out to the game company Sierra, which he loved. In his letter—which he wrote more than 20 years ago—he said he wanted to be a game programmer one day.
“It was my dream job, to be a game designer there! They published my favorite adventure games: King’s Quest, Space Quest, Quest for Glory, Conquests of the Longbow, and so much more,” he wrote.
Sierra Entertainment, which is now owned by gaming giant Activision Blizzard, published a ton of adventure, strategy, and roleplaying games—including the super popular “Half-Life” series. They wrote Sellers back at the time:
“I was so giddy when my teacher handed me this letter. I saw Sierra’s logo, shown every time you launched one of their games, like how film companies do it. I was so excited,” he wrote on Imgur. “I could not believe that they actually wrote me back!”
The letter essentially wished him the best of luck and added that he needs to get a degree in computer science in order to make games. “In order to be successful in the field of computer programming we recommend a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or a Master of Science in Computer Science,” it said.
Sellers said that he never got a degree in Computer Science.
“Twenty years ago this month, my dream job’s company wished me good luck on all of my future plans,” he wrote.
He added: “I never got a degree in Computer Science. Life took me another way. It was dull and miserable work. Last year, I decided to be the master of my own fate.”
“After quitting my [expletive] job in retail management, I taught myself how to code. And guess who just published his first game for Apple and Google?”
So, after 20 years, Sellers decided he wanted to make games.
Currently, the game--Survival Horror--appears to have favorable reviews and interest.
