Earlier this year, we heard stories of celebrities leaving generous tips that were well above the 20 percent expectation at restaurants. This holiday season, a patron who visited Bellevue restaurant did the same, leaving a huge tip and a sweet holiday message for its staff.

Dwayne Clark, 59, always sat in the same booth to enjoy his order of the usual – eggs over easy, hash browns and extra crispy bacon. The regular customer was described as a “low-key guy” by staff at The Brief Encounter Cafe in Bellevue, Washington State, reported WLTX.

Last Saturday, Dec. 16, was the same as any other weekend. He ate his breakfast and chatted with the restaurant employees.

What shocked the staff this time was what he left after his meal—a $3,000 tip on a $39.60 bill.

On the back of the receipt, he wrote the following sweet message:

“You guys do a great job! When I was 7, I washed dishes and my mom cooked in a diner like this. We were dirt poor and didn’t have money for Christmas. Hopefully, this will help all of you have a better Christmas.”

Wayne also left his mobile phone number just in case his credit card company questioned the validity of the tip, reported the news station.

The customer may not have been a celebrity but he was the CEO of Aegis Living. Clark told the TODAY show that he hopes to inspire people to start a big tip movement where people leave inspirational messages on the back of a receipt and maybe an extra tip, reported the TODAY show.

“We are living in this great time of not connecting with each other—whether it’s the political situation, or whether it’s technology,” Clark told the television program.

“I think the reason [people like this story] is not because of the money, but because of this shared connection. Wouldn’t it be great if we all fed each other’s souls in a positive way?” he continued.

“I eat there a lot and the people who work there have great attitudes, are really hardworking people,” the CEO added.

The restaurant staff was so grateful for the act of kindness that they were reportedly moved to tears. Some of the employees said the money was really needed, reported WLTX.
