Major Democratic Donor Steve Mostyn Reportedly Dead

A major Democratic donor, Steve Mostyn, died after what his wife described as “a sudden onset and battle with a mental health issue,” CBS reported. He was 46 years old.

Amber Mostyn, his wife, said he died on Wednesday. “He was a true friend, and a faithful fighter for those who did not have a voice,” Mostyn said. “Steve touched countless lives.”

She didn’t confirm his cause of death but suggested that he might have killed himself.

ABC13, however, reported that he committed suicide.

Based in Texas, Mostyn made his money via representing homeowners who sued insurance companies. He was also an attorney based in the Houston area, according to the Texas Tribune.

Mostyn is survived by his wife, daughter Ava, son Mitch, and nephew, Skyler Anderson.

CBS reported that he and his wife contributed nearly $5 million to the Democratic Party as former President Obama was being re-elected in 2012. At the time, they were the 10th-largest donors in the United States. They gave nearly $3.5 million last year to the party.

The Tribune reported the following:

Mostyn gave more than $2.3 million toward Democrats’ 2014 efforts to elect candidates including Wendy Davis, who ran for governor. In total, he had given Davis more than $3 million over the course of her political career. Since 2000, he had donated more than $24 million to political causes in his name and in his law firm’s name, according to Texas Ethics Commission records.

“He was the epitome of a Texas Democrat -- big, bold, fearless, and caring. He dedicated his professional and personal life to fighting for the little guy,” Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said in a statement, CBS reported. “I am so deeply saddened to have lost our dear friend.”

U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi also mourned his death.
