A grandmother from Iowa claimed half of the nearly $700 million Powerball prize, said lottery officials on Nov. 5.
West opted for the cash option, which will pay her an immediate $191 million.
“When you get numbers right, they show up in red,” West said of winning. “Well, nothing showed up in red because I had the wrong date in there.”
After correcting the date, she said, “It was red, red, red, red, red, red, jackpot, and I thought I’ve done something wrong again.”
“I’m going to get a car big enough,” she added to CBS, “that I can take all my grandchildren places now.”
The paper reported that West, 51, grew up mainly in Earlham and has lived in Dallas County, Iowa, most of her life.
“We have a board set up that will go over the requests and decide what is in the best interests of the Callum Foundation,” West added. “The whole thing of knowing when to pull together a team and work on these plans came from years of playing and daydreaming about winning the lottery. Then once it finally happens, it’s a whole new ballgame.”
The 51-year-old worked for a health insurance organization, but says she retired last week— barely a month after starting a new job.
A biography on the site of a charity she established says West has three adult daughters, six grandchildren, and seven siblings. She got a general-equivalency diploma in 1986 and an Upper Iowa University degree in human resources in 2006.
