Police say witnesses told them the victim got into an argument with 20 to 30 bicyclists who appear to be all males between 16 and 18, in the area of San Vicente Boulevard and Carrillo Drive at about 5 p.m. Saturday.
The Wilshire neighborhood of Los Angeles is known for its cultural institutions and historic buildings, and is the location of Fox and MGM studios.
“A physical altercation ensued, which resulted in additional suspects joining the altercation,” the police wrote in a press release Monday.
When onlookers tried to intervene, police said, the teens left the area together, riding southbound on Carrillo Drive.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and treated the man, who had sustained minor but visible injuries. The victim declined to be taken to a hospital, police reported.
It was the city’s third incident involving large groups of bicyclists in recent months.
A person filming the incident can be heard yelling “Hey, watch out! Watch out!” to the bicyclists, and the car nearly hits several bicycles.
In August, a mob of about 40 teens on bikes attacked and robbed a man downtown near Olympic Boulevard and Hope Street.
The man said he was a recent immigrant from Kyrgyzstan seeking asylum in Los Angeles.
The incident started when one teen threw a bottle at the victim’s car and he got out to look for damage. The man said the teens quickly surrounded him and started attacking him. They got into his car and stole his possessions, then jumped on the roof of the car, he reported.
The attack continued until a witness intervened.
The man sustained bruises and a broken leg, he told reporters.
