The Los Angeles City Council is left with an impending decision regarding Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas’s vacancy following his recent suspension.
The council president can either appoint a replacement to temporarily fill the position, or the city council can vote for an appointment, according to LA City Clerk Holly Wolcott.
“I imagine we’ll see at least an appointment letter any day now,” Wolcott told The Epoch Times.
Ridley-Thomas was indicted earlier in the month for allegedly conspiring with Marilyn Flynn, former dean of the University of Southern California School of Social Work, in allowing his son to receive graduate admission, a full scholarship, and a job through the university.
The council voted to suspend Ridley-Thomas on Oct. 20.
His seat currently remains empty as his office proceeds to run operations for his district during his absence, Wolcott said.
If Ridley-Thomas is found guilty, he will be permanently removed from the city council. His vacancy will either be filled through a special election or city council President Nury Martinez can appoint a “caretaker” without council action, Wolcott said.
Alternatively, the city council can vote on the temporary appointment.
If a caretaker is appointed, he or she will be responsible for caring for constituent services and ensure Ridley-Thomas’s office continues to serve the constituents of the 10th district.
If Ridley-Thomas is found not guilty, he can resume his city council position.
“This is considered right now a temporary vacancy,” Wolcott said.
On Oct. 25, Ridley Thomas pleaded not guilty to federal charges. He waits for his next tentative trial date, set for Dec. 21.
Martinez and Ridley-Thomas weren’t immediately available for comment.
