President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden made a combined income of nearly $580,000 in 2022, according to documents published on April 18 by the White House.
The president earned $400,000, which makes up the majority of the couple’s income, and was granted an expense allowance of $50,000, an amount that is determined by Congress to help him fulfill his duties. Any unused expense from that allowance goes back to the Treasury Department.
Jill Biden teaches at Northern Virginia Community College and is the first presidential spouse to continue an outside-paid job while her husband is in office. She earned $82,335 from that job last year, the tax records show.
According to the return, the couple paid $169,820 in combined federal and state income taxes in Delaware and Virginia, and their 2022 effective federal income tax rate was 23.8 percent compared to 25 percent in 2021.
Biden’s Charitable Donations
Biden and the first lady also reported contributions of $20,180 to 20 various charities, with the largest amount, $5,000, going to the Beau Biden Foundation, a public charity that aims to prevent child abuse through the effective education of adults and children. The charity is named after their son Beau, the former attorney general of Delaware who died in 2015 after being diagnosed with brain cancer.
They also donated to St. Joseph on the Brandywine, their home church parish, to the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, and the National Fraternal Order of Police Foundation, among others.
As vice president, Harris earned $219,171, according to tax records. However, she also reported $74,772 in income from her writing, a sharp decline from the $452,664 in income she reported as a writer last year.
Harris has authored two books: “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey” and a children’s book, “Superheroes Are Everywhere.”
Emhoff, meanwhile, earned nearly $170,000 from his job as a faculty member at Georgetown Law School. Together the couple paid $93,570 in federal income tax, amounting to a 2022 effective federal income tax rate of 20.5 percent.
They also paid $17,612 in California income tax, and Emhoff paid $9,697 in District of Columbia income tax. They contributed $23,000 to charity in 2022.
In a statement alongside the tax returns, the White House said Biden has released 25 years of tax returns to the American public as part of his “commitment to being transparent with the American people about the finances of the Commander-in-Chief.”
While releasing annual income and tax returns to the public is common practice among U.S. Presidents, former President Donald Trump declined to do so, arguing that an ongoing audit prevented him from doing it, which triggered a lengthy court battle.
In 2015, 2016, and 2017, the Trumps reported an income tax liability of $750. In 2018, they paid nearly $1 million in taxes, and in 2019, that figure was $133,445.
In 2020, the Trumps reported a loss of $4.8 million and paid $0 in federal taxes.
