Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has officially divorced from her husband, Ahmed Hirsi, according to reports.
The former couple were first married in 2002 but split in 2008 and Omar went on to marry British-born Ahmed Elmi in 2009.
However, she and Elmi later divorced in 2017 and in January 2018 she remarried Hirsi, who she says is the father of her three children.
They say the records also show that the children will attend school in Washington where Omar works, and will regularly travel to Minnesota to visit their father.
“Like any other family in this situation, Ilhan wishes for privacy and will not be commenting any further.”
The news of the divorce comes just months after a Washington, D.C., woman accused the Democratic congresswoman of having an affair with her husband.
The publication claimed Omar and Mynett had been seen holding hands while leaving a restaurant in Los Angeles and that she had moved out of the family home she shared with Hirsi, into a penthouse apartment.
Furthermore, Mail Online said that Omar and Mynett were not only dating, but living together “on and off” at a secret apartment in Washington and had been planning “romantic vacations” together.
A source allegedly told the publication: “Right now they are more or less living together whenever she is in D.C. They say they travel as business associates when they are staying in the same hotel rooms. They are even planning a romantic vacation at Christmas.
“The suspicion is that when their divorces are finalized they will quietly decide to make it official.”
The congresswoman, who has been fiercely private about her personal life, added, “I have three beautiful, little children and a family to care for… so for me, my focus is doing the work that I feel I was destined to do.”
