House Republican Proposes Amendment to Allow Trump to Serve 3rd Term

Rep. Andy Ogles has proposed revising a constitutional amendment that would allow President Donald Trump to serve three terms.

The Tennessee Republican on Thursday called for a revision of the 22nd Amendment, which sets a two-term limit for presidents. The measure would allow any president to serve a third term if their first two terms were non-consecutive.

Ogle’s proposal comes just three days after Trump was sworn in for a historic second non-consecutive term. The feat was only accomplished by one other president, Grover Cleveland, who served from 1885 to 1889 and then again from 1893 to 1897.

“President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years,” Ogles said in a statement.

“He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.”

Ogles cited Trump’s accomplishments during the first few days of his second White House term, including securing the southern border, eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives from the federal government, and withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO).

“In just a few short days, President Trump has already taken action to undo the catastrophic policies of the Biden Administration and put the United States back on the path to strength and prosperity,” he said.

‘Not For Me’

Trump himself has joked about running for a third term following his 2024 election win, but he also said in an interview with Time magazine that he wouldn’t be in favor of such a challenge.

“Not for me. I wouldn’t be in favor of it at all. I intend to serve four years and do a great job. And I want to bring our country back. I want to put it back on the right track,” Trump said.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president in 1932, 1936, 1940, and 1944. As a result of his unprecedented four terms, the 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951, limiting all future presidents to two elected terms.

Ogle’s measure needs a two-thirds vote in both chambers of Congress. It must also be ratified by 38 states to be added to the Constitution.

Trump will be 82 years old at the end of his second term in 2029 and 86 at the end of a hypothetical third term.
