Hilton plans to close its hotel near the Oakland airport after nearly 60 years, hotel and port officials confirmed June 25.

The 360-room hotel on Hegenberger Road sits on 19 acres and is just minutes from the busy San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.

Hilton Hotels and Resorts officials didn’t explain why they decided to shutter the longtime location, but said they were helping employees explore potential transfer opportunities within the company.

“Hotel ownership has reached a decision to permanently close Hilton Oakland Airport, effective Aug. 28, 2024,” a Hilton spokesperson told The Epoch Times in an email. “Hilton continues to welcome guests across the Bay Area where Hilton and our franchise partners operate nearly 50 hotels.”

The company also plans to continue doing its part to drive business, tourism, and growth across the Bay Area and the state, the spokesperson added.

The Port of Oakland, which operates the airport, was notified about the hotel closure by Park Hotels & Resorts, the company that owns the Hilton brand and many other hotel brands, according to port spokeswoman Marilyn Sandifur.

“We understand that the hospitality sector continues to be negatively impacted by larger economic trends post-pandemic, and as the owner of this site, the Port will be seeking the best Port use for this property moving forward,” Ms. Sandifur said in a statement provided to The Epoch Times.

Port officials plan to work with the hotel operators and the city to assist employees affected by the closure, she added.

Several businesses have closed in the Hegenberger business corridor in Oakland, which has seen an increase in crime in the past few years. California’s famous burger chain In-N-Out, located on Hegenberger Road in Oakland, closed in March citing repeated crime and safety issues.

The Denny’s located in the corridor also closed in January because of crime. In November 2023, Starbucks shuttered its location on Hegenberger Road after repeated car break-ins. Other establishments locked dining room doors and now only serve customers using drive-through windows.

The crime wave has prompted city and county authorities to work with the Port of Oakland and California Highway Patrol to improve public safety in the area.
