Great White Shark Leaps From Water to Snatch Fish, Boy Sent Running

A video captured the moment a great white shark, or another type of large shark, jumped out of the water and frightened a boy.

The family was on a boat off Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts on July 20 when bubbles were spotted approaching the boat.

Marc Costa of Columbia Sportfishing in Orleans, the captain, said the boat was some three miles west of Great Island when the shark approached the vessel, MassLive.com reported.

“We have just gone out and got two fish on,” Costa said. “Bringing the fish in, you can see what happened. That animal came up and grabbed the fish, right there. Right in our faces. It was pretty cool.”

He claimed the shark was a great white, the report said.

The captain said he saw another group of great white sharks doing the same time about 10 days before and two miles from the encounter on Saturday.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy confirmed it was a great white shark, CNN reported.

Great whites are common sights around Cape Cod each summer. Recently, in June, 12 great whites were spotted near the bay.

Last year, a college student was killed by a great white in the first fatal attack in Massachusetts in decades.

Brothers Capture, Release Tiger Shark

Two brothers in Texas caught a 12-foot-long tiger shark before releasing it back into the ocean.
The brothers, Andrew and Stephen Seaborn of Team Seaborn Fishing, captured the shark, which measured at 11 feet, 11 inches. They were fishing near Bob Hall Pier, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The Seaborns, who are from Austin, used stingray as a bait.

They ultimately released it after taking the photo.

“Dreams came true today,” Team Seaborn wrote on Facebook. “Two uneventful nights out on the pier. Friday night we had some beautiful baits out that barely got touched. Saw a few Kingfish caught and some pup sharks but none of the shark rigs were getting picked up,” they wrote.

The post added, “As I increased the drag I looked in disbelief as line continued to slowly peel off my reel. Minutes passed and line was still steadily leaving my reel.”

Then, after about 30 to 45 minutes of effort, “a beautiful Tiger came to the surface, and with the help of others (massive shoutout to Allen for all his help).”

Great White ‘Pinged’ Off New Jersey

Researchers tracking a 10-foot, 800-pound shark off the eastern coast of the United States recently announced the massive creature has made its presence known off the coast of New Jersey by way of a “ping.”
The shark—a great white dubbed Miss May—”pinged in” at 2:29 a.m. on July 3, according to an update on the OCEARCH website, an ocean research organization that tracks sharks.
A “ping” happens when a tagged shark’s dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water and transmits a signal, which is noted for tracking purposes, an OCEARCH representative told Pensacola News Journal.

The great white has been swimming north for over a month. Earlier on June 28, OCEARCH researchers posted an update on Twitter, featuring a map of the great white’s recent movements in eastern coastal waters.

“Today @MissMay_Shark is pinging close to shore a little north of Kitty Hawk North Carolina. She has been making steady progress north since the beginning of the month.
