George W. Bush Stands by Support for Brett Kavanaugh

Among those standing by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is former president George W. Bush, who said that he’s known Kavanaugh for many years.

Bush initially praised Kavanaugh’s nomination in July, saying: “Brett is a brilliant jurist who has faithfully applied the Constitution and laws throughout his 12 years on the D.C. Circuit.”

“He is a fine husband, father, and friend—and a man of the highest integrity. He will make a superb Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States,” Bush added.

Since July, Kavanaugh, 53, met with every single senator and then sailed through his confirmation hearings, but a few days after the hearings ended, Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.) revealed that a woman had anonymously accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her more than 30 years ago, when they were both in high school.

Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, 51, a professor in California, later said she was the woman and agreed to testify to her claims, with a hearing scheduled for Sept. 14. She has since said she wouldn’t testify, and Kavanaugh has vehemently denied the accusation.
Among those standing by Kavanaugh is Bush. “Laura and I have known and respected Brett Kavanaugh for decades, and we stand by our comments the night Judge Kavanaugh was nominated,” he said in a statement sent to Politico.

Kavanaugh worked for Bush in several capacities, including staff secretary. Bush appointed Kavanaugh to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 2006.

Third Man Denies Allegations

Kavanaugh and Mark Judge, the two men alleged to be in the room with Ford, have both denied her allegations.

The professor said that two other boys were at the party, which is said to have taken place during the 1980s in Maryland. One of those men, Patrick Smyth, said late Tuesday, Sept. 18, that he also denies being at the party.

“I understand that I have been identified by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford as the person she remembers as ‘PJ’ who supposedly was present at the party she described in her statements to the Washington Post,” Smyth said in a statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee and obtained by CNN.

“I am issuing this statement today to make it clear to all involved that I have no knowledge of the party in question; nor do I have any knowledge of the allegations of improper conduct she has leveled against Brett Kavanaugh.”

“Personally speaking, I have known Brett Kavanaugh since high school and I know him to be a person of great integrity, a great friend, and I have never witnessed any improper conduct by Brett Kavanaugh towards women,” he added.

Echoing Judge, Smyth said he does not want to testify about the matter.
