Fullerton city council accepted a grant from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to establish driving under the influence (DUI) training and education programs.

The nearly $320,000 in funding, which council accepted June 15, will finance programs for police officers and other members of the criminal justice system, such as forensic scientists and prosecutors.

Councilmember Fred Jung said the money will go toward drug education and anti-drug funding.

“I want to reassure those in our public, action is being taken—oftentimes without much fanfare—but those items in government don’t necessarily get much applause these days,” Jung said during a June 15 city council meeting.

The training will help authorities recognize the signs and symptoms of both alcohol and drug impairment.

Grant funds will reimburse officer salaries, overtime and operational supplies in the 2021-2022 fiscal budget.

The CHP approved the Fullerton Police Department’s grant application and allocated the funds from its cannabis tax fund grant program.

“Grant funding helps Fullerton police officers, and other law enforcement agencies, to better serve their communities and keep them safe through proactive measures,” a city report states.
