EDMONDS, Wash.—At the Apologia Forum on the evening of April 14, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Senior Pastor Alec Rowlands explored faith and tradition at Westgate Chapel.
Their discussion on faith, leadership, and policy attracted an audience of over 1,000 people.
The Apologia Forum, a series that probes the interplay of faith, culture, and public life, offers a platform for discussions on religion, philosophy, and ethics. According to the forum website, it aims to cultivate understanding and critical thinking about the role of faith in addressing contemporary issues, embodying the spirit of “Apologia”—reasoned arguments that defend one’s beliefs and actions.
Mr. Pompeo, known for his straightforward approach and conservative stance, shared about the significant role his Christian faith played during his time in office.
“My faith was central to my work in the administration,” Mr. Pompeo said.
He elaborated on his efforts to integrate Christian principles into his actions, especially in foreign policy and national security. He critiqued the current administration’s approach to international relations, especially in the Middle East, and contrasted it with his own efforts to strengthen ties with Israel and minimize U.S. military involvement through diplomacy.
“We need to support our allies robustly and ensure that our actions overseas reflect our national values,” Mr. Pompeo said.
He also talked about cultural shifts and political correctness, expressing concerns about their impact of undermining traditional American values and institutions. He discussed challenges faced by the U.S. military and educational systems and called for a return to foundational principles centered on freedom and responsibility.
In conversation with Mr. Rowlands at the forum, Mr. Pompeo articulated deep concerns over China’s global ambitions and their implications for the United States.
“We’ve seen the threat that the Chinese Communist Party poses not only to our own security but to the idea of freedom around the world. Their moves in the South China Sea, their approach to intellectual property theft, and their general disregard for human rights are alarming,” Mr. Pompeo stated.
He talked about the need for a strategic response.
“America must have a strategy that reflects the magnitude of the challenge China presents. It’s not just about competition; it’s about protecting our way of life and ensuring a free world for future generations,” he said.
He also called on the audience to deepen their political engagement and uphold conservative values, and he stressed the importance of community involvement and personal integrity in shaping the future of the country.
