AGUA CALIENTE, Calif.—Firefighters have fully contained a wildfire that blackened 187 acres in the arid eastern reaches of San Diego County, officials said June 2.

The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 12:30 p.m. May 30 near Milepost 28 on Great Southern Overland Stage Route in Shelter Valley, in the Agua Caliente area of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, according to an incident report from Cal Fire.

“As of 7 p.m. Saturday firefighters had the spread of the blaze halted at 187 acres and had the burn area 100 percent contained,” Cal Fire PIO Captain Brent Pascua told City News Service on Sunday.

Firefighters were engaged in heavy mop-up operations in an area with large mulch piles, with some sections having mulch as deep as two to three feet over multiple acres. Numerous firefighting air tankers from throughout the state were flying fire-suppression missions during the containment.

A total of 60 personnel were currently assigned to the fire, including two engines, two hand crews, two water tenders, one dozer, and 10 unnamed resources.

Two firefighter injuries and one civilian injury have been reported. The cause of the fire was under investigation, Cal Fire said.
