A retired firefighter from Oklahoma named Mike Hughes has dedicated himself to continue serving the community by building a house for two Cleveland women who live on social security.
Patricia Carmack and Shannon Johnson’s decade-old house was so mold-ridden that it was dangerous to even go inside without a face mask. The mold spread over everything, including the furniture, walls and floor.
Hughes and his wife decided to build the women a new home right next to the old house. They’ve been working on it every Sunday from dawn to dusk, and they hope to finish the task by winter.
“I’ve pulled money out of my pocket. No big deal,” he said.
Hughes also received help from friends and businesses in Sperry, Sand Springs, and Skiatook. He thinks the ladies should have a comfortable place to stay at night just like he does.
“It’s already a blessing but once it gets finished, you know it’s gonna be more of a blessing,” said Carmack.
