Dozens of Ice Cream Products Recalled Nationwide Over Contamination Concerns

Totally Cool Inc., a Maryland-based frozen food manufacturer, has announced a voluntary nationwide recall of dozens of ice cream products due to a potential listeria contamination.

In a recall notice published on June 24, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the affected products were distributed to retailers nationwide and are also available through direct delivery.

The agency said the company ceased production and distribution of the affected products after FDA sampling found the presence of listeria monocytogenes—a bacteria that can sometimes cause fatal illnesses in certain individuals.

“The company continues its investigation and is taking preventive actions,” the FDA said, noting no other products by the company apart from those listed in the recall are impacted.

According to the FDA, no illnesses have been connected to the recalled items as of June 24.

However, the agency is urging anyone who has any of the recalled products in their households to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

According to the FDA, listeria is a bacteria that can cause infection and symptoms such as diarrhea, achy muscles, fever, and nausea.

A severe form of the infection—also known as listeriosis—is fatal for about 20 percent of people who contract it, namely very young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.
