The “Hayden Bookcase” made by Dania Furniture is “unstable if it is not anchored to the wall, posing tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or serious injuries to children.”
No further information was provided regarding the child’s death.
The Epoch Times has contacted Dania Furniture for further comment.
According to the CPSC, the recalled Hayden bookcase contains six storage cubbies and is made of brown wood with three sliding white doors. The bookcase measures 35.5 inches in width, 16 inches in depth, and 73 inches in height.
Consumers can find a label on the back of each unit containing the product name and SKU number LB2225/A.
The bookcases were distributed by Dania Furniture but manufactured in Italy.
STURDY Act
Consumers are asked to immediately stop using the recalled bookcase if it is not anchored to the wall and “place it in an area that children cannot access.”When contacted by customers, Dania Furniture will set up free in-home installation of a tip-over restraint kit.
In cases where the company can’t carry out those services, consumers can get a refund. In that instance, customers will receive a full refund of the purchase price of the recalled bookcase and Dania Furniture will arrange for the bookcase to be collected and disposed of.
Dania Furniture is also contacting all purchasers directly regarding the recall.
The recall of the Hayden Bookcase comes nearly a year after the STURDY Act went into effect.
Under the legislation, introduced by Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), furniture companies must ensure their products—including chests, bureaus, drawers, and dressers—undergo rigorous, objective, repeatable, and measurable testing for real-world use, to ensure they are safe and are not likely to tip over onto children.
