The death of a 2-month-old baby left in an SUV parked outside a home in eastern San Diego County is under investigation, authorities said on June 19.

A family member called 911 on June 13 after finding the baby girl unresponsive inside an SUV that had been parked for several hours in the 10000 block of Settle Road in Santee, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies with the Santee station and paramedics rushed to provide life-saving measures to the baby girl, who later died at the hospital, a department spokesperson told The Epoch Times.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call the county Sheriff’s Child Abuse Unit at 858-285-6222 or, if after hours, call the department’s non-emergency line at 858-868-3200.

Authorities warn that warmer weather during summer months can bring dangerous temperatures. It is against the state law to leave young children alone in a car, the department said.

“It only takes minutes for the temperatures inside your car to heat up like an oven,” the sheriff’s department said in a June 19 statement.

Kaitlyn’s Law—named after a six-month-old baby who died in 2000 after being left in a hot car for more than two hours by her babysitter in Riverside County—prohibits leaving a child age 6 or under in a car without supervision.
