As late morning traffic whizzed by northbound near the intersection of Avenida Pico and Avenida La Plata in San Clemente, Calif., the sunshine and light sea breeze failed to mask the fatality that occurred just a few hours prior.

At approximately 1:25 a.m. on June 7, Joshua Gene Cervantes, 40, of San Juan Capistrano, was fatally struck by a vehicle in what investigators are labeling as a hit-and-run incident while he was riding near the area of the intersection.

When Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies of the Major Accident Reconstructive Team arrived on scene, they immediately attempted life-saving CPR measures to revive Cervantes, whose body was found with head and neck trauma.

He was pronounced dead by law enforcement officials at 1:34 a.m.

Parts of the vehicle that hit Cervantes were found scattered near the area of impact, while a short distance away from the debris, a car matching with the part’s description was found abandoned by the suspect.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department continues an active investigation in search of the suspect.

No arrests have been made at this time.
