Sarah Sullivan’s birthday cake didn’t have 106 candles, but it was decorated with a big “106,” a glowing tribute to Ms. Sullivan at the party honoring her in a Costa Mesa senior living center.
“That looks like my grandson over there,” Sullivan said joyfully as she was wheeled in, pointing to a news photographer and holding onto a birthday card she had received.
Ms. Sullivan has been living at the care home for the past five years.
A posterboard celebrating the big day displayed photos both classic and current of Ms. Sullivan, known by staff members as a beloved and “unwavering spirit” who deserved a hearty cheer for a life’s journey that began on May 28, 1918.
Costa Mesa Mayor John Stephens attended to offer congratulations.
“On behalf of the city of Costa Mesa, Sarah, we are presenting you with this certificate of recognition honoring you on this milestone occasion,” said Stephens. “Your remarkable journey is testament to a life well-lived.”
Sullivan was captivated by the gold-painted document frame.
“Did you guys see this frame?” she asked relatives.
As a semi-supercentenarian, those ages 105 to 110, Ms. Sullivan is among the 3.78 per 100,000 Californians who are 105 or older, according to the Census Bureau.
As for her future, Ms. Sullivan had one thing on her mind: eating her beautifully crafted birthday cake with her family and care stewards at Pacific Senior Living.
“She’s really the best,” a staff member said. “We are really glad you all got to see her smile.”
