A golfer in Colorado was involved in a freak accident last week that left his leg impaled by a large bolt.
Matt Gutierrez was practicing for the upcoming Greeley Country Club pro-am tournament on Aug. 20, at the club when the wedge club he was swinging got caught in a boundary rope in front of him.
The force of his motion yanked the eye bolt, approximately five inches long, out of the ground and the bolt flew at him. The bolt ended up impaling his leg, piercing a bone.
“I looked down”
“Next thing you know, I caught the rope that they had laid down in front of us and I didn’t even feel it go into my knee, surprisingly. And I was actually more concerned about my club, ‘cause I had a big yellow rope around it,” the golfer told KDVR.“And I looked down and that bolt’s sticking out of my knee.”
“When he swung the club, it would have caught that rope and caused that to pop out of the ground and somehow shoot at an angle that impacted and stuck into his leg,” added Mike Fleig, general manager at the club.
Rushed to the Hospital
Gutierrez was rushed to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley and underwent an operation to stop a bone infection. The bolt was ultimately removed, and Gutierrez plans to keep it.
“My buddies are making fun of me and saying I should make a chain of it, and just wear it every time I go to the golf course,” he said.
The country club has removed the boundary rope and doesn’t plan on re-installing it.
