ORANGE, Calif.—As thousands of people gathered around a 90-foot Christmas tree in Old Towne, the holiday spirit came into full effect Dec. 4, accompanied by carolers and orchestral musicians.
“We are going to ask the audience to sing along with us on this one,” conductor Michael Short told the crowd as the band softly began playing “Silent Night.”
Attendees immediately joined in—with many likely noticing this year’s 28th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony was not much different from other such ceremonies over the last two decades. The city of Orange would proudly agree.
“We love how much the community enjoys just inviting in the season with music, lights, fun, and festive food,” City of Orange spokesman Paul Etkins told The Epoch Times. “We think it’s a pretty important event, especially after everything we’ve been through, including the pandemic, and it’s a chance for us all to come together ... and share each other’s company to bring in the season with joy and light.”
The crowd, many of whom were adorned with Santa Claus hats or snowman outfits, not only browsed Old Towne Orange’s quaint cafes and bars, but also participated in games, crafts, and photo booths, set up for the occasion.
Children also had the opportunity to have a photo with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, who were sitting in decorated chairs adjacent to the plaza.
“It’s been so positive out here tonight,” Eatkins said.
Near the giant Christmas tree decorated with glowing white lights, a teenager playfully pulled his girlfriend close for a photo as she kissed him on the cheek. Surrounding them were other families and friends, with the same idea of snapping a Christmas photo.
Near the end of the ceremony, a light sprinkle of rain prompted some attendees to open their umbrellas and slowly begin moving back towards their Orange County homes.
“You can make the events bigger and brighter, but one thing that remains the same is that how much we all come together as a family here,” Eatkins said.
