A city staff employee was impaled by a pole Sunday afternoon after a horror crash that nearly took his life.
The employee, who was in his late 20s, was believed to have had a medical episode before the crash.
It’s unclear as of writing what the medical complication was.
One witness told police the man had veered off the road into the cemetery fencing when a pole went through the driver’s neck and out the back window.
San Antonio Police Sgt. Thomas Haymaker said the employee was traveling west on the 700 block of Castroville Road near General McMullen Drive around 2:20 p.m. when he veered off-road, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
“We think maybe he had a medical episode,” Haymaker told the newspaper. “The fact that he took 50 feet of line (fence) out, I just think something went wrong with this guy.”
According to a newspaper reporter who was at the scene, coils of the fence were caught in the front of the truck. It also appeared that the airbag had been deployed.
Emergency personnel had to cut away part of the fence pole before the victim was able to be sent to the hospital with it still impaled in his neck, KSAT reported.
The city employee was transported to University Hospital where he currently remains in critical condition.
According to the San Antonio Express-News, no one else was injured in the crash.
Police are describing it as an accident.
