A carjacking suspect was killed by a man who was concealed-carrying a gun in Wisconsin, local police said.
The shooting happened on Feb. 26 near the Milwaukee MachineTool Corporation around 6 a.m.
The would-be-carjacker, later identified as Carlos Martin, who died at the scene, was armed. Martin was convicted in 2015 of felony battery and in 2016 of burglary.
The 24-year-old man has not been identified publicly.
He stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. He has a valid concealed-carry permit.
Alderman Cavalier Johnson said that the death was preventable, but that Martin made the “bad decision” of trying to rob somebody.
“It’s a war zone, so you’re used to carjackers. You’re used to murderers,” Gabriel Alwin said. “You gotta watch out for stuff like that. If not you’re a victim—I’m not trying to be a victim so...”
Alwin witnessed the shooting while heading to work.
Milwaukee Police Capt. Andra Williams said that the best way to prevent being carjacked is to be aware of your surroundings.
A second person may have been involved in the attempted carjacking and police are searching for a green Chrysler Pacifica.
Once the investigation is complete, officers will send the case to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors will then decide whether the shooting was justified self-defense.
