Candace Owens Says Congressional Hearing Was ‘A Hoax,’ Democrats Want Black People to Fail

Conservative commentator Candace Owens said that Democrats want black people to fail in an appearance on Fox News a day after she tore into the left during a congressional hearing on white nationalism and hate crimes.

Owens said at the April 9 hearing that she regularly speaks in front of conservative groups and has not encountered bigotry from any of them.

“Conservatives are patriots, the president is a patriot, and I’m a patriot, and there is no skin color in patriotism,” Owens said. “I am willing to fall on a sword a thousand times for [black Americans] to wake up and realize that we are being lied to, abused, and used by the Democrat Party.”

She also got into a tense exchange with Reps. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) and Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) after the former played a video from an appearance during which Owens discussed Adolf Hitler and his claim to be a nationalist, while he was actually a national socialist.

“I do not believe we should be characterizing Hitler as a nationalist,” Owens said. “He was a homicidal, psychopathic maniac that killed his own people. A nationalist would not kill their own people. … That was unbelievably dishonest, and he did not allow me to respond to it.”

Videos of Owens’s comments garnered millions of views, including a C-Span clip that got over 4 million views in 24 hours.

Reacting to the heavy criticism she’s faced from some on the left, Owens, communications director for Turning Point USA, told Laura Ingraham that white nationalism is not a widespread problem in America compared to other issues, such as the high rates of black-on-black crime.

“The entire hearing, in my opinion, was a hoax,” Owens said in her first interview after the hearing. “The continued hoax on black America which comes to us from Democrats who want us ultimately to fail by focusing on something that is not harming us when you look at all of the other issues that we are facing.”

“I think in many ways people on the Right felt vindicated. I know there are a lot of moderate people that came over and realized that what I was talking about were actually real issues in black America,” Owens said.

Civil rights attorney Leo Terrell, who was also brought on the show, said that Owens was assuming that all Democrats want black people to fail.

He also noted that while Owens said no Democrats were at the opening of the American embassy in Jerusalem, the majority of Jews voted for Democrats in the 2016 election. He added that he thought Owens was “playing the victim.”

“You know deep down inside that just because you disagree with the Democrats, you cannot assume that Democrats want black people to fail,” Terrell said.

Ingraham said that she agreed that white nationalism wasn’t that big of a problem and asked Terrell to focus on the problems in black communities.

Owens later said that one of the major problems is the absence of black fathers.

“Leo, you got your truth out, Candace got her truth out,” Ingraham concluded at the end of the exchange, which saw both Owens and Terrell try to talk over each other multiple times. She said that they should both go to Chicago with her and have a debate and try to figure out solutions to the high crime there.
