A Simi Valley, California, man charged with the attempted assassination of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh three years ago pleaded guilty April 8.
A trial is set for June 9.
Nicholas John Roske, 29, was dressed in black when he was arrested the morning of June 8, 2022, while carrying a gun, a knife, and zip ties near Kavanaugh’s home in Chevy Chase, Maryland, a Washington suburb, according to an affidavit, obtained by NTD.
“Montgomery County Emergency of Communications Center fielded a call from an individual who identified himself as Nicholas John Roske,” FBI special agent Ian Montijo wrote in his June 8, 2022, affidavit.
“Roske informed the call taker that he was having suicidal thoughts and had a firearm in his suitcase. Roske also told the call taker he came from California to kill a specific United States Supreme Court Justice.”
Montijo’s affidavit further states that Roske was upset over the Uvalde, Texas, school massacre and thought that Kavanaugh would vote in favor of loosening gun control laws.
NTD reported that Roske arrived in Virginia from California on June 7, 2022, landing just before midnight. After hailing a taxi, he instructed the driver to take him to Maryland, where Kavanaugh and his family lived. When he received a text from his sister, Roske responded, “I love you.”
“I told her what I was doing, I was up to, and she told me that that wasn’t the way to go about trying to make the world a better place and, you know, that she didn’t want to, you know, she wanted to have me as a sibling for the rest of her life and not, you know, with that ending,” Roske said in a Montgomery County Police Department station interview room.
“I saw that leaked draft, it made me upset, and then it made me want to ... I don’t know,” Roske said. “I was under the delusion that I could make the world a better place by killing him.”
Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 3 with U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman. If a jury finds Roske guilty, he faces 30 years to life in prison.
