Gov. Gavin Newsom on July 13 announced that the California Highway Patrol (CHP) welcomed 102 new graduates onboard, who will soon be deployed throughout the state.

This graduation is part of the state’s initiative to recruit 1,000 CHP officers and marks 816 swearings-in since the campaign began in 2022, the governor’s office said.

“These new officers represent the best of California: Public servants dedicated to protecting our communities and making our neighborhoods safe,” Mr. Newsom said in a statement. “I thank these officers for their service on behalf of the people of California.”

The CHP has more than 6,500 sworn officers, the statement said.

After completing a 26-week training program, the new officers were sworn in by CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee during a graduation ceremony at the West Sacramento CHP Academy.

The training emphasizes nobility in policing, leadership, ethics, and cultural diversity, the statement said. Cadets also learn about mental illness response, crisis intervention, and other critical skills.

“The CHP is pleased to welcome these new officers to the CHP family,” Mr. Duryee said. “They are beginning a career of service and I trust they will do everything they can to take care of their communities. Every corner of the state deserves to have the best trained and prepared personnel, and I am confident these new officers will be able to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security possible.”

The CHP also reports a growing trend in recruitment, with 409 officers added so far in 2024, surpassing the total of 407 officers sworn in during 2023.

According to the agency, two more cadet classes are scheduled to complete the academy by the end of the year.

A day after announcing the new CHP officers, the governor stated on July 14 that California has deployed 61 officers, including 40 CHP members, to support security at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

“Public safety transcends party lines. California is proud to support our law enforcement colleagues in Wisconsin during this important political event,” Mr. Newsom said in a statement.

Former President Donald Trump was nominated as the official Republican Presidential Candidate at the convention on July 15, less than two days after surviving an assassination attempt at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
