The brother of recently slain Mollie Tibbetts made a last minute decision to play in his high school’s season-opening football game and ended up leading them to a win.
Scott Tibbetts attends Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcolm (BGM) High School, where his sister graduated from before going to the University of Iowa and is the team’s quarterback. Mollie Tibbetts’s July 18 abduction and death made national headlines for weeks.
BGM notched a victory over Lisbon High School, with Tibbetts, a senior, starting at quarterback and throwing for two touchdowns.
Tibbetts also ran for a touchdown and recovered a late onside kick that effectively ended the game.
Other Brother Speaks Out
Mollie Tibbetts’s other brother, Jake Tibbetts, appeared at the University of Iowa on Wednesday, Aug. 22, to address the crowd at a vigil in her honor following the confirmation of her death.Jake Tibbetts spoke to several hundred students, telling them that the death of his sister has changed his life forever.
“We’re going to miss her dearly but, to be honest, what made her so special is she was just like anyone standing here. She loved to run. She loved Harry Potter. She loved the hawks. She loved her family. She was goofy. She was clumsy.”
His emotional speech included a call for the crowd to remember how people across Iowa and the United States came together to search for his missing sister and support his family during her disappearance.
“Remember this as a time that the country came together for one girl. One girl that loved everyone. One girl that loved everything and wanted the best for everyone. Don’t remember this as the time that someone made a very poor decision and took a girl away,” he said.
He later asked everyone to reach out to a stranger and introduce themselves in honor of his departed sister.
