WASHINGTON—A bipartisan duo of House lawmakers has introduced a resolution to honor the man who lost his life at the July 13 Trump rally, during an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

Corey Comperatore, 50, attended the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. He was killed when Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, opened fire from a rooftop in an attempt to assassinate the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

Reps. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) and Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) introduced the resolution on July 15 to remember Mr. Comperatore.

It calls Mr. Comperatore “a hero to his family and hero to his country for his service.”

It states that the House “recognizes the life of Corey Comperatore and his service to the country” and “recognizes that Corey Comperatore gave his life for his wife and two daughters.”

The resolution also calls on government officials to condemn the attempted assassination of former President Trump and all types of political violence.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, paid tribute to Mr. Comperatore on July 14.

“Corey was a firefighter. Corey went to church every Sunday,“ he told reporters. ”Corey loved his community, and, most especially, Corey loved his family. Corey was an avid supporter of the former president and was so excited to be there last night with him in the community.”

Mr. Comperatore was a former firefighter. He leaves behind his wife, Helen Comperatore, and two daughters.

In a post on his social media site, Truth Social, former President Trump called on people to “hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed.”

President Joe Biden gave his “deepest condolences” and said that Mr. Comperatore was a father protecting his family “from the bullets that were being fired, and he lost his life. G-d love him.”

In addition to former President Trump, the other people injured during the shooting were James Copenhaver, 74, and David Dutch, 57. They are in stable condition after being in critical condition, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

A GoFundMe to raise money to support the victims of the shooting and their families has raised more than $4.8 million.
