NEW YORK CITY—Amtrak is preparing for the Thanksgiving holiday, with over one million expected passengers.
“Thanksgiving is our busiest week of the entire year. We'd like to refer to it as our Super Bowl,” Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams told reporters on Nov. 27.
Over a million people traveled on Amtrak trains during Thanksgiving week in 2023, and Abrams said they expect even more this year.
Abrams said Amtrak has taken measures to accommodate the heavier traffic, adding that it utilizes every train and train car in the fleet.
Amtrak also has extra staff they call “ambassadors,” whose purpose is to answer questions from people who are inexperienced with the trains. Ambassadors are volunteer workers and can be identified by their neon-yellow vests.
To have a stress-free travel experience, Abrams suggested travelers get to the station at least an hour early. He also advised that people download the Amtrak App for live updates on trains and service and digital tickets.
Meanwhile, regarding security concerns, he advised travelers to report any suspicious behavior.
Security is bolstered during the holiday season to ensure safety, he said.
The Amtrak Police Department (APD) operates in stations and on trains.
