An ambulance driver apparently fell asleep before a crash that caused an emergency worker to die, police said.
The crash happened while the ambulance was rushing a mother and her 5-month-old from a South Bend hospital to another hospital in Indiannapolis.
A medical technician working with the mother and infant in the back was killed in the crash on Monday morning around 3:45 a.m.
After the driver fell asleep, the vehicle went through a red light and hit a car that had a green light, state police said.
The ambulance driver has been identified as Christine Wesner, 26; the deceased technician has been identified as Mousa Chaban, 32.
Chaban was partially ejected from the vehicle and died from his injuries.
The patient and the mother weren’t injured in the crash.
It’s unclear whether Wesner will face criminal charges at this time.
