Three people are injured after a shooting at a mall in Delaware late Saturday.

The shooting at Christiana Mall, in Newark, forced shoppers to evacuate as it became the site of a huge police response.

“We can confirm that there are three victims who were injured by gunfire and transported to an area hospital for medical treatment,” police said on Twitter around 8:50 p.m. local time.

“There are currently no public safety concerns at Christiana Mall and the surrounding area,” police said, asking people to still avoid the area.

By 9:20 p.m., police confirmed the suspect was “not in custody at this time.”

In a statement later released, police confirmed a criminal investigation was underway, and said the mall would remain closed for the rest of the evening.

“The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a shooting incident at the Christiana Mall. ... There is an increased police presence in the area and Mall Road is currently closed,” the statement reads.

Police added that people who are seeking to find someone can go to a reunification site set up at the north entrance of the mall.

Christiana Mall is the largest shopping mall in the Delaware, which does not have sales tax.
