NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.—A woman was killed and another person seriously injured Tuesday during a robbery and shooting near the Barnes & Noble bookstore at Fashion Island in Newport Beach.
Initial reports from police indicated a mid-afternoon robbery at the shopping mall led to one of the suspects opening fire, seriously injuring one victim, an official said.
While the suspects were fleeing, a woman described as “elderly” was fatally shot, officials said.
There was no immediate description of a suspect or how many people were involved.
KCAL9 reported that suspects in the shooting led authorities on a pursuit that led into the South Gate area of Los Angeles County. That chase came to an end near Lincoln Avenue and Paramount Boulevard, where two suspects got out and fled into a neighborhood, attempting to hide in the yards of some homes.
At least one of those suspects eventually surrendered to police.
According to KCAL9, several other people bailed out of the suspects’ vehicle prior to the pursuit coming to an end.
There was no immediate confirmation from police on whether the chase suspects were connected to the Newport shooting.
