SAN DIEGO—Two men were fatally struck by passenger trains in San Diego on Jan. 11 over a five-hour period on stretches of rail about 13 miles apart, one at the edge of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and the other near the city’s international airport.
The first of the two transit-system fatalities occurred about 6:30 a.m. Thursday, when a southbound Coaster train hit a pedestrian near the intersection of Carmel Mountain and Sorrento Valley roads, just west of Interstate 5 and south of state Route 56, sheriff’s Sgt. Jason King said.
At the time of the deadly impact, the man was trying to rescue his dog, whose leash had become tangled on something on or next to the tracks, according to OnSceneTV.com. The animal survived unharmed, the video news agency reported.
Just before 11:30 that morning, a northbound Coaster train fatally struck a man near the intersection of Pacific Highway and Sassafras Street, about a mile west of Balboa Park in the Middletown district, King said. It was unclear why the pedestrian was on the tracks when the train arrived.
The identities of the deceased were not immediately available.
