NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Firefighters found two dead bodies “inside of a human-dug cave/excavation” in Northridge, authorities said May 5.

The discovery was reported around 10:30 a.m. Sunday at 8700 N. Lindley Ave., near the intersection of Parthenia Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).

A white powdery substance was observed also inside, the department said. LAFD hazardous materials specialists scanned the area and found all readings normal, adding that wind dissipated the small amounts of powder initially observed.

The department said no off-site hazard existed and no evacuations were ordered.

LAFD personnel remained on the scene to assist the Los Angeles County Office of Medical Examiner with both body recoveries.

No further information was immediately available.
