GARDEN GROVE, Calif.—A man and woman on electric bicycles and their three children being pulled in bike trailers were injured by a hit-and-run driver who was caught and arrested, authorities said Monday, July 8.
The two adults were riding with the children in tow around 7:35 p.m. Sunday on in the 12300 block of Haster Street at Twin Tree Lane when they were struck by a black 2003 Toyota Camry, and the driver left the scene, Garden Grove police Sgt. Nick Jensen told City News Service. The neighborhood is a mix of single-family homes and apartments near the Garden Grove (22) Freeway.
“A nearby witness followed the suspect vehicle and notified officers of its whereabouts as it fled the scene of the collision,” said Traffic Investigator John Yergler. “Officers located the vehicle, conducted a traffic stop and detained the driver/solo occupant of the vehicle approximately 1.2 miles from the original collision scene.”
The father, 27, and two children—a 5-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl—were rushed to hospitals in critical condition, according to police. The mother, 25, and a 7-month-old girl were hospitalized with stable vital signs. The mother has since been released.
The three critically injured patients remained in that condition, and one of the stable patients was treated at a hospital and released, Mr. Yergler said.
The suspect was identified as Ceferino Ramos, 29, of Santa Ana, Mr. Jensen said.
“Sobriety tests were administered and the driver was ultimately arrested for suspected DUI and hit and run,” Mr. Yergler said.
Mr. Yergler asked who witnessed the crash and has any additional information or has video footage call him at 714-741-5772 or email at [email protected].
