More than 100 retired U.S. generals have called on Congress to support Israel and annihilate the terrorist group Hamas.
“To borrow from Winston Churchill, Israel might be fighting by itself alone but it is not fighting for itself alone,” they continued.
“We have seen firsthand how Israel shares and helps protect American interests and values; we should not hesitate to come to Israel’s aid in its hour of need.”
The exact Churchill quote, which was from a speech in 1940 during World War II, is: “We are fighting by ourselves alone; but we are not fighting for ourselves alone.”
Thousands of people have been killed in the latest conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has launched a barrage of attacks on the Jewish state since Oct. 7.
That day had the largest single-day massacre of Jews since the Holocaust with more than 1,300 Israelis killed by terrorists.
In response, Israel has launched aerial attacks on Gaza, which Hamas controls.
The retired generals applauded President Joe Biden’s support for the Jewish state but said that more assistance would be necessary for Israel to fend off Hamas.
“This should include immediate resupply to Israel of American-produced munitions that are critical to protecting Israeli civilians from the terrorists’ indiscriminate rocket attacks,” they said.
The retired generals reiterated President Biden’s message to deter Israel’s other enemies from taking advantage of the situation.
“U.S. assistance should also extend to defending Israel in all international settings, especially at the United Nations, from the spurious accusations that are certain to be levied against it,” they said.
“Israel is strong enough to defend itself, by itself. It will prevail, regardless of the cost,” they stated.
“With American assistance, that cost can, and should, be reduced. Steadfast American support will not only help Israel defend itself today but also signal to the world—U.S. friends and foes alike—that America remains a force to be counted on.”
The Biden administration is soon expected to send a request to Congress for supplemental assistance to Israel, which already receives $3.3 billion in annual U.S. military assistance.
The retired generals who signed the letter include former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Joseph Dunford Jr., former Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice Chairman Edmund P. Giambastiani Jr., and former National Guard Bureau Chief Frank Grass.
