A student was killed and another is in custody after a shooting on the campus of St. Helena College and Career Academy in Louisiana, authorities said.

The St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened at around 3 p.m. on the campus in Greensburg. Authorities said at least two other people were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately available.

Sheriff Nat Williams told reporters that the individual believed to be the shooter, a juvenile enrolled at the school, has been taken into custody. He also mentioned that the specific charges will be disclosed at a later point.

A motive for the shooting is unknown.

Authorities are actively responding to the situation as the St. Helena Parish School District works closely with law enforcement agencies.

In a statement posted on social media Tuesday evening, St. Helena Parish School District Superintendent Kelli Joseph confirmed the tragic incident, stating that the scene was still active, and school officials are cooperating with authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly.

“A tragic incident occurred on the campus of SHCCA,” Ms. Joseph said in a statement. “An official statement from the school district is forthcoming regarding details that can be shared with the community,” she added.

Due to the ongoing situation and out of an abundance of caution, school activities have been suspended until Friday, impacting not only regular classes but also the scheduled football game and school board meeting. This decision has been made to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, staff, and community members, the school district said.

The St. Helena Parish School District said it will provide support to those affected by this distressing event. Grief counselors will be made available for all students upon their return to school this Friday, offering emotional support and guidance during this difficult time.
