The No. 1-ranked U.S. women’s volleyball team remained undefeated in its final preliminary match Sunday, beating a surprisingly tough Turkey team 27–25, 25–16, 25–19.

Turkey played a smart match, identifying the U.S. side’s weaknesses and attacking them, while the U.S. tried to make mid-match adjustments. Turkey took a 13–7 lead in the first set before the U.S. woke up. The set was tied repeatedly before the U.S. finally got two points ahead.

The U.S. found its footing in the second set, opening and finishing strong. In the third set starting setter and three-time Olympian Lindsey Berg fell to the floor, saying she felt something pop. She spent the remainder on the sidelines with her Achilles tendon iced.

It took the U.S. team a few minutes to recover and adjust to replacement setter Courtney Thompson. Once they did, the U.S. women closed out the match.

U.S. coach Hugh McCutcheon told NBC Sports, “We think she [Berg]’s okay, nothing’s torn. We think something’s strained.”

It remains to be seen if berg will be back in the lineup for the quarterfinal match on Tuesday, August 7.
