Evelyn Lauder Dies
Evelyn Lauder, 75, the daughter-in-law of cosmetics empire founder Estée Lauder, died this past weekend from complications of nongenetic ovarian cancer, according to The New York Times.
After battling breast cancer herself in 1989, she became a prominent breast cancer awareness advocate. In 1992, together with friend Alexandra Penney from Self magazine, Lauder organized the distribution of pink ribbons at Estée Lauder counters nationwide during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month in conjunction with the magazine’s second special edition issue dedicated to the cause.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation was founded in 1993 by Lauder and has raised over $350 million in funding. Lauder is survived by her husband Leonard Lauder, her sons, William and Gary, and five grandchildren.
Oprah Wins Honorary Oscar
Media mogul and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey, 57, was among three individuals honored this past Saturday at the third annual Governors Awards in Los Angeles. Winfrey was the recipient of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which is given from time to time at Academy Award ceremonies for outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes.
“Rather than championing a single cause or campaign, Winfrey has shone a spotlight on a host of social issues including education, basic rights, child abuse and disaster relief,” reads a statement from the organization’s website. Also honored for their excellence was actor James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith.
Ringo Starr and Timberland Team for Charity
Outdoor apparel manufacturer Timberland is launching a new program titled “Canvas that Cares” to help provide funds for nonprofit organizations. Money will be raised through the auction of custom-designed, limited edition Earthkeepers footwear—Timberland’s “greenest” product, which, among other things, uses recycled materials such as rubber and plastic.
Former Beatle Ringo Starr is the inaugural celebrity to help this project by lending his original peace sign artwork and personal autograph on the first 75 boots being offered via eBay on Dec. 1, according to a press release by Timberland. Proceeds from this sale are to be given to WaterAid, a nonprofit group dedicated to improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene in the world’s poorest communities.
