Internet portal Yahoo has been on a whirlwind ride over the past few months since current CEO Marissa Mayer took over. After a huge number of acquisitions--topped by the $1.1 billion takeover of Tumblr--Yahoo today said that it be coming out with a new logo for the company.
But wait, this is not just a brand new logo announcement. In fact, Yahoo’s going to show the whole world a brand new logo for the company each day for the next 30 days--and then announce its official new logo at the end of the 30-day period.
Seems strange? Unorthodox? Indeed. One wonders whether Yahoo is trying to keep itself in the news for just a little bit longer so its stock price can continue on its upward trajectory. Or maybe increase traffic to its home page from curious onlookers who want to see what the new logo looks like each day. Whatever. I’m just a simple tech reporter who doesn’t understand the machinations of giant corporations.
In the announcement, Kathy Savitt, Chief Marketing Officer of Yahoo, said “Over the past year, there’s been a renewed sense of purpose and progress at Yahoo!, and we want everything we do to reflect this spirit of innovation. While the company is rapidly evolving, our logo — the essence of our brand — should too...To get everyone warmed up, we are kicking off 30 days of change. Beginning now, we will display a variation of the logo on our homepage and throughout our network in the U.S. for the next month. It’s our way of having some fun while honoring the legacy of our present logo.”
