The Taipei District Court on Friday handed down life sentences to the former president of Taiwan, Chen Shui-bian, and his wife Wu Shu-jen.
The court ruled that both Chen and Wu were guilty on six charges, including embezzlement and taking bribes. Chen was also fined NT$200 million, while his wife was fined NT$300 million. In addition to the life sentences, the couple was stripped of their civil rights for life.
Chen’s son, Chen Chih-chung, was sentenced to two years and six months, and received a fine of NT$150 million on money laundering charges.
Huang Jui-ching, Chen’s daughter-in-law, was sentenced to one year and eight months and also received a fine of NT$150 million on money laundering charges.
Other co-defendants, including Chen’s relatives, friends, and former aides also received prison sentences.
Chen’s lawyer, Tseng Te-rong, said he found the life sentence “rather heavy.” It was reported that Chen himself was not surprised at the court’s decision.
Chen‘s lawyers are expected to soon file an appeal.
