Police arrested Sylvie Cachay’s ex-boyfriend Nick Brooks on Friday night over the death of the swimsuit designer, the New York Daily News reported.
Brooks, 24, was charged with attempted murder and strangulation in the death of 33-year-old Cachay, who was found dead in the Soho House New York hotel early on Thursday morning.
“We’re confident the intent to kill her was there,” a police insider told the New York Daily News. “That’s what you need for attempted murder—that he wanted to kill her.”
Police said they found red marks on her neck, which they believe were caused by strangulation. Authorities also suspect foul play because Cachay was found clothed in the bathtub.
Before the arrest, police were questioning Brooks, the son of Academy Award-winning composer Joseph Brooks. The elder Brooks is famous for his 1977 song “You Light Up My Life” in the namesake film.
The New York Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the case a homicide on Friday evening before Brooks’s arrest, according to CBS News, after an initial autopsy was inconclusive.
According to the office, toxicology and tissue reports are forthcoming, and police are taking fingernail samples and DNA swabs from Brooks to compare to evidence found on Cachay.
Brooks had checked into the Soho House New York hotel with Cachay, a fashion designer known for her SYLA swimsuit collection, even though the two had broken-up not long ago.
Cachay’s family, still grieving over her death, believes that Brooks was involved in the apparent strangulation, according to CBS News.
“We’re all thinking that he was responsible right now for her death,” Cachay’s cousin, Francoise Jakobsson, told the news agency.
