Golden State Warriors superstar guard Stephen Curry will give back to his alma mater, Davidson College, as a volunteer assistant general manager for its basketball programs.

Davidson announced the appointment of Curry and former Davidson soccer standout Matt Berman as assistant general managers on Monday. Curry, 36, played for Davidson from 2006 to 2009 before he was the Warriors’ No. 7 pick in the 2009 draft, and Berman played soccer at Davidson before graduating in 2005.

Curry and Berman will help in advisory roles to help both men’s and women’s basketball programs thrive in the NIL landscape of college athletics. A college program’s ability to have players profit from their name, image, and likeness has become a major factor that affects how college athletes choose where to compete.

“The Davidson experience is top-notch,” Curry said in the university’s statement. “My journey from when I got to Davidson in 2006 to now demonstrated that I had the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level, got a great education, an amazing network through the Davidson alumni, and continue to wave the Davidson flag. I want very talented, high-character student-athletes to have that same experience.”

Curry became the nation’s leading scorer at Davidson in 2008–2009 when he averaged 28.6 points per game and became a lottery pick. The Wildcats fell short of the NCAA tournament that year, but Curry led the team to the Big Dance the two previous seasons. Davidson has been to the tournament five times since, and starting in 1991–1992, he has posted a winning record, except in 2023–2024.

This year’s Wildcats squad has a 16–15 record and is the No. 12 seed in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament, which tips off on Wednesday. Davidson women’s basketball has had three winning seasons in the past four years, and this season’s squad went 19–13 but fell short to eventual conference tournament champion George Mason on March 8.

“The goal for this is to invest in the next student-athlete that’s coming into Davidson today,” Curry said in the statement. “They don’t have to take cuts on what the market says; they deserve to be part of the brand of what it means to be a Davidson scholar-athlete with integrity in your academic experience.”

“The commitment to a four-year graduation process provides countless opportunities professionally in sports or as a game changer in life,” Curry said. “And that leads into my role as an assistant GM with Matt Berman—our ability to be a resource and a sounding board for the program, but also support each student-athlete, to develop personal relationships with each of them to help guide them every step of the way through their Davidson experience.”

Berman got involved in professional soccer after his time at Davidson with an ownership stake in Burnley FC in England. Along with his father, Don, and sister, Erica, he is teaming up with Curry to create the Curry-Berman Fund, which will jumpstart their revenue share efforts for Davidson basketball players.

“For Davidson, providing one of the best athletic programs in the country is an integral part of our identity as one of the nation’s best liberal arts colleges,” Davidson president Doug Hicks said in the statement. “The Currys and Bermans have provided an extraordinary gift, and they will give of their own time and expertise to ensure that we can continue providing an unparalleled educational experience—for our scholar-athletes and for our entire college community.”

Davidson had not previously participated in NIL, but the school announced the change in February. The school’s NIL portal will apply to all Wildcats sports.

“We enter this new world of college sports with the ability to compete for championships,” said Davidson women’s basketball coach Gayle Fulks in the statement. “We are eager to build on this generosity in order for Davidson to continue to match up with the other teams in our conference, and we are grateful to Stephen, Matt, and other alums and supporters who have stood shoulder to shoulder with us.”
