As the NFL training camps approach in the next month, contenders and pretenders for 2024 have already crystallized since free agency, the draft, and minicamps. Here’s a look at how all 32 teams rank based on last season’s success, overall roster talent, and offseason moves this year.
- Kansas City Chiefs: It looked like business as usual this offseason for the defending Super Bowl champions with a loaded roster. The Chiefs’ wide receiver additions of Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy will only help superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
- San Francisco 49ers: Despite the loss of captain Arik Armstead and Brandon Aiyuk’s contract stalemate, the 49ers have the most talented roster in the league. Quarterback Brock Purdy has been making strides since leading the team to the Super Bowl, and running back Christian McCaffrey is back amid a new contract.
- Baltimore Ravens: With the addition of running back Derrick Henry, the Ravens look more dangerous than ever. The Ravens also have star quarterback Lamar Jackson, who is fresh off of his deepest playoff run ever last season.
- Philadelphia Eagles: Amid adding running back Saquon Barkley, the Eagles look poised to threaten the 49ers for the NFC Championship. The Eagles started 10–1 last season but melted down after that in 2023. Philadelphia made a host of changes besides Barkley to avoid that again.
- Detroit Lions: After getting close to the Super Bowl in an NFC title game loss, the Lions look to bounce back. Quarterback Jared Goff has his top receiver back in Amon-Ra St. Brown amid a new contract.
- Buffalo Bills: Quarterback Josh Allen has to prove he can keep thriving without star receiver Stefon Diggs, but the roster otherwise looks as poised as ever for a playoff run.
- Cincinnati Bengals: With quarterback Joe Burrow healthy again, the Bengals could reach a second Super Bowl in four seasons. Many key players remain from that squad, including wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
- Dallas Cowboys: Despite having one of the most talented rosters in the league, the Cowboys haven’t succeeded in the playoffs for years. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb’s holdout and quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract uncertainty don’t help either.
- Green Bay Packers: Quarterback Jordan Love could take a step in his second season as the starter, and the Packers could follow suit behind his leadership. Last year’s squad threatened to knock off the 49ers in the Divisional Round.
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Quarterback Baker Mayfield has his crew back in star wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. The Buccaneers also kept the defensive unit solid amid changes.
- Houston Texans: Amid a flurry of moves, quarterback C.J. Stroud could make big strides in his second season. Stroud has Diggs to throw to and running back Joe Mixon to hand off to.
- Miami Dolphins: With so many key players back, the Dolphins look poised to contend for the AFC East again and make a playoff run. Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is still one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the league.
- New York Jets: Quarterback Aaron Rodgers returns from injury, and the team has veteran talent around him.
- Pittsburgh Steelers: With quarterback Russell Wilson under center, the Steelers look primed to go further in the playoffs.
- Cleveland Browns: While the Browns have one of the strongest defenses in the league, questions around quarterback Deshaun Watson remain. The Browns don’t have quarterback Joe Flacco to bail the team out this time.
- Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jaguars could make strides with quarterback Trevor Lawrence and other key players back.
- Atlanta Falcons: With quarterback Kirk Cousins under center, the Falcons could make noise in the NFC South.
- Los Angeles Rams: While the Rams made the playoffs last season, losing superstar defensive lineman Aaron Donald to retirement is a big loss.
- Indianapolis Colts: Quarterback Anthony Richardson returning healthy can provide a spark for a team that still has a strong running back in Jonathan Taylor. In addition, the Colts have quarterback Joe Flacco waiting in the wings if Richardson gets injured again.
- Seattle Seahawks: If quarterback Geno Smith plays well, the Seahawks have a change to make noise in the NFC West again.
- Minnesota Vikings: A new era begins for the Vikings under center with Cousins gone, but the offense still has superstar wideout Justin Jefferson.
- New Orleans Saints: If the Saints can get a strong year out of quarterback Derek Carr, the team could cause trouble in the NFC South.
- Los Angeles Chargers: If quarterback Justin Herbert can string together victories, new head coach Jim Harbaugh could make a successful transition back to the NFL from Michigan.
- Denver Broncos: Rookie quarterback Bo Nix could provide a spark for the Broncos after two years of Wilson not panning out.
- Chicago Bears: Quarterback and No. 1 pick Caleb Williams begins his NFL career amid meteoric expectations.
- Tennessee Titans: Quarterback Will Levis could take another step in his second year, but playing without Henry leaves a massive void.
- Washington Commanders: Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels could make his team competitive right away.
- New York Giants: Quarterback Daniel Jones needs a bounce-back year, but he will have to do it without Barkley.
- Arizona Cardinals: With quarterback Kyler Murray back healthy, the Cardinals could cause a little trouble this season.
- New England Patriots: After investing heavily on offense in the draft, young players will need to prove it on the field this fall under new head coach Jerod Mayo.
- Las Vegas Raiders: Quarterbacks Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew could determine how much the Raiders sink or swim in 2024.
- Carolina Panthers: Quarterback Bryce Young will look to make improvements under first year head coach Dave Canales.
