Nic Fink tied for silver in the 100-meter breaststroke with Great Britain’s Adam Peaty, with a time of 59.05.
Nicolo Martinenghi of Italy narrowly beat out the pair, winning gold with a time of 59.03.
American fencers Lee Kiefer and Lauren Scruggs faced off in the women's individual foil finals, with the athletes taking home gold and silver medals, respectively.
This is Scruggs's first Olympics, and earlier in the day she bested Arianna Errigo of Italy, who was ranked No. 1 in the world.

Organizers of the Paris Olympics issued a statement after coming under fire for parodying a biblical scene in the Games’ opening ceremony.
Drag performers evoked a scene of the Last Supper, and the Catholic Church in France criticized “scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity” in the opening display.
A spokesperson on Sunday told media that this was not the intention.
Torri Huske of Team USA claimed gold in the women's individual 100-meter butterfly with a time of 55.59, with fellow American swimmer Gretchen Walsh just .04 behind.
The victory was achieved after Huske narrowly missed the podium—by a hundredth of a second—for the same event in 2020 in Tokyo.
"I feel like I'm in shock right now, like I don't even know how to process it, like I need to cry but I'm also smiling," she told reporters after the win.
American swimmers Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh took the gold and bronze medals respectively in the women's 100-meter butterfly. Walsh earlier set an Olympic record in the semifinals with a time of 55.38 in the same event, but holds a world record for the event, at 55:18.

Léon Marchand of France won gold in the men's 400-meter individual medley, setting a new Olympic record with a time of 4:02:95.
Michael Phelps previously held the record of 4:03:84, recorded in the 2008 Olympics.
Tomoyuki Matsushita of Japan won silver and Team USA's Carson Foster took bronze.
The United States’ men’s basketball team took its first step toward winning a fifth consecutive gold medal at the Summer Olympics on July 28 with a 110–84 victory over Serbia.
Serbia started its tournament with medal aspirations of its own. Led by three-time NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic and Bogdan Bogdanovic, Serbia had won two silver medals in its history in the Olympics. But having Jokic on the roster raised the confidence level of the entire country.
The two countries played each other just 11 days before the official start of the Olympic tournament in Abu Dhabi, where the United States won 105–79. But that was a warm-up game in which Bogdanovic wasn’t a factor.
Team USA bested Serbia 110–84 in the opening game of men’s basketball.
The team’s next game is against South Sudan on Wednesday.
Coco Yoshizawa, 14, of Japan took the gold in the women's skateboard street final.
Liz Akama, 15, of Japan secured silver and Rayssa Leal, 16, of Brazil, took the bronze medal.
Rafael Nadal's victory over Marton Fucsovics of Hungary in the first round of men's singles tennis means it will be Nadal versus Novak Djokovic again in the second round.
Nadal is a 22-time Grand Slam champion and 14-time French Open winner. Djokovic is a 24-time Grand Slam winner.
"Playing him is like finals, in any tournament," Djokovic told reporters on day one of the games, about a potential matchup against Nadal. "Particularly here, knowing what he has achieved and what he's done for our sport, but particularly here at Roland-Garros, his record speaks for itself. I look forward to it. If we get to face each other, it's going to be possibly the last time we're going to face each other on a big stage. So I'm sure that people would enjoy it. Team USA is leading Serbia 58–49 in men's basketball, in large part thanks to Kevin Durant, who scored 21 points in eight shots.
He is currently the highest scorer in Olympics basketball, and has three gold medals under his belt.
South Korea narrowly beat out China for the gold in women's team archery after a tiebreaker shot.
Jeon Hunyoung, Lim Sihyeon, and Nam Suhyeon are representing South Korea, and secured the country's 10th consecutive gold medal in women's team archery. This makes South Korea undefeated in the event since it began in Seoul in 1988.
Lim is a new world record holder, last week scoring 694 and setting a world record in women's individual archery.
Japanese skateboarders are topping the skateboard street run section, with 15-year-old Liz Akama finishing with a score of 89.26, 14-year-old Coco Yoshizawa with 86.80, and 19-year-old Funa Nakayama with 79.77.
Next up is the trick section.
Kanak Jha, a five time national champion, is competing in his third Olympics and is the sole table tennis representative of Team USA.
"The ultimate goal and dream is to do history for the USA and get a medal in the Olympics," said Jha.
After defeating Cho Daesong of Korea, he has advanced to the Round of 32 which will take place Wednesday.
After cycling wheel-to-wheel with Jenny Rissveds of Sweden for more than a lap, Team USA's Haley Batten secured the silver medal in the women's mountain bike cross-country event.
French cyclist Pauline Ferrand-Prévot took home gold after building a long lead ahead of the pack, winning by 2 minutes and 57 seconds.
Now a four-time Olympian, Lee Kiefer became the first U.S. athlete to win gold in foil fencing four years ago at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, putting her in a position to defend her title as she enters the quarterfinals today.
Kiefer, a third year student at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, initially thought Tokyo would be her last Olympic Games.
A fencer since age 5, the Tokyo win gave her the confidence to continue on the path of fencing, and she was granted a continued leave of absence to compete in the Paris 2024 games.
Team USA impressed on day one with all five surfers advancing directly to Round 3.
Caroline Marks took the top score of the day of 17.93, outpacing her closest competitor by 9.46 points.
“Everyone's just been so positive and so excited to be here,” Marks told reporters. “It's really rare to stay with your other competitors—it's a very individual sport. I think we're just having a lot of fun and feeding off of each other. And even though we are all individually here to win our medals, we're all backing each other and supporting each other. … We're all just really enjoying it because it's so rare for us.”
Mountain bike cross country starts Sunday with the women's event, where the weather turned hot and sunny after the Olympics had kicked off in the pouring rain.
The cyclists are climbing up the man-made Elancourt Hill north of the city center, which at an altitude of 231 meters at its peak is the highest point in the Paris region.
French cyclist Loana Lecomte secured an early lead, with French favorite Pauline Ferrand-Prévot pulling far ahead by lap three.
Women’s basketball great Diana Taurasi, 42, has extra incentive to help Team USA bring home the gold in Paris with a record sixth gold medal on the line. But it’s not about that for her.
“We’re all here to bring home gold, and it starts every single day from here on out,” Taurasi told reporters on July 27. “So I’m excited for this group, for this unit. It’s the beginning of a journey for us.”
That journey tips off on July 28 with a game against Japan at 3 p.m. ET. Despite Team USA’s dominance in women’s basketball amid star-studded lineups, Japan has a history with the United States.

The 27-year-old American and the five-woman U.S. gymnastics team took the floor during the second qualifying subdivision for the Paris Games on Sunday. The Americans are heavily favored to win the team gold after finishing runner-up to Russia three years ago in Tokyo.
The United States is shooting for what many pundits stateside believe is a sure gold medal in the men’s basketball tournament at the Paris Olympics.
And the superstar-filled team’s confidence is on an upward arc. When asked at Friday’s press conference which team he looked most forward to playing at the Olympics, 3-point king Stephen Curry said: “Whoever’s in the gold medal game.”
