The New England Patriots have announced that star player Christian Barmore has received treatment at Mass General Brigham after he was diagnosed with blood clots.

In a statement released on the Patriots’ official website on July 28, the franchise said “there is no timetable” for when Barmore, who turned 25 on July 28, will be back on the field.

The team said doctors at Mass General Brigham “tested, evaluated, and treated” the defensive tackle and wished him a full and speedy recovery.

“Our principal concern at this time is Christian’s health and wellbeing. Fortunately, Mass General Brigham provides some of the best healthcare in the world,” the Patriots said in the statement.

“While there is no current timetable for his return, we know Christian is getting tremendous care and we look forward to his full recovery.”

In a post on his Instagram stories on July 28, Barmore thanked everyone “for all the support, thoughts, and prayers.”

“I'll be back soon,” the Pennsylvania native wrote.

Barmore’s agent, Nicole Lynn, said in a post on X that she appreciates how Patriots trainer Jim Whalen handled the situation.
“I would be remiss if I did not thank Patriots trainer Jim Whalen for his absolute diligence and care over the last couple of days. Today could have looked a lot different without Jim’s expertise,” Ms. Lynn wrote.

Fans React to Diagnosis

The Patriots’ announcement led to a lot of reactions from NFL fans, who took to social media to wish the 25-year-old a speedy recovery.
“Thank God they caught it. Praying for a speedy recovery,” one person wrote in a post on X.
“Praying he’s okay. that’s horrible to find out especially on ur birthday,” another wrote.

Barmore signed a four-year, $84 million contract extension with the Patriots in April, putting him in the top 10 for highest-paid defensive tackles.

According to the Patriots’ official website, Barmore has tallied 133 tackles and 12.5 sacks over 44 games, including 11 game starts. He twice appeared in all 17 games. in 2021 and 2023.

He was drafted in the second round (No. 38 overall) out of Alabama by the Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Barmore isn’t the first Patriots player to suffer from blood clots in recent years. In 2019, veteran Patriots center David Andrews missed the entire season after he was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs.

Andrews has declined to elaborate on what exactly caused the medical issue. During an interview with 247Sports in May 2020, he said he'd been dealing with chest pains and had trouble breathing before starting to cough up blood.

“All of this was partly my fault, just being dumb and pushing through it. I thought I was sick and I really did not feel like myself. It was not like I was having a bad camp. I just was not having a consistent camp,” he said.

Andrews was back on the field in 2020 and is now entering his 10th season with the team this year.
