Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has established himself as the most efficient goal-scorer in Europe.

The Norwegian striker tallied his 100th goal in 105 appearances for Manchester City in a 2–2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday. He tied soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo’s record as the fastest to reach that 100-goal milestone for a European club.

It was fitting that Haaland tied the record with Ronaldo because the two players often draw comparisons to one another for their ability to create and finish scoring chances. Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola believes that Haaland is also on par with Argentina great Lionel Messi.

Haaland has already scored 10 goals in six appearances this season.

“He has the numbers for Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who controlled the last decade, 15 years, absolutely everything,” Guardiola said in a press conference early in the season. “I had a feeling that he feels better than last season at this stage. After travel last season, he felt a bit [so-so] or felt he was tired.”

Haaland joined Manchester City in the summer of 2022 and helped the club win the Premier League and its first Champions League title in his debut season. He scored 52 goals across all competitions in that first year for Manchester City—more than any English Premier League player and the most by a City player in club history.
In 2022, Haaland also set the record for most goals scored in a single Premier League season with 36 and was named the EUFA Men’s Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year, becoming the first player to win both awards in the same year.
Last season, Haaland scored 36 goals and six assists in 41 games across all competitions. He became the fastest player to score 50 Premier League goals in 48 games, surpassing Andy Cole by 17 games.
Overall, Haaland has 73 goals in the Premier League, 18 in the Champions League, eight in the FA Cup, and one in the Carabao Cup since joining City. He also has 11 hat-tricks with Manchester City across all competitions.

At 6-foot-4, Haaland is an imposing player who often towers over his opponents. Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne are the only players on the current team with 100 goals for Manchester City. Argentina striker Sergio Agüero is the leading scorer in Manchester City’s history, with 260 goals in 390 games over 10 seasons.

Manchester City is arguably the most talented club in Europe and is the favorite to win the English Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. It would be the second time they have achieved that feat—called the Treble—since 2022–23.

In addition to Haaland, Manchester City has two of the English Premier League’s most talented midfielders—Phil Foden and Rodri. All three players were named to the Men’s Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year preseason list.

Haaland already has Manchester City rolling this season.
